The steelman
Family homelessness is driven by the housing affordability crisis — rents far outpacing wages — not by migration. Blaming new arrivals scapegoats vulnerable people for a structural problem that predates them and would exist with or without the border surge.
The rebuttal
The affordability crisis is real and is the long-run driver — conservatives should say so and back housing supply. But that's exactly why a sudden, unplanned surge into already-tight shelter systems was so harmful: it stacked an acute shock on top of a chronic shortage. HUD didn't editorialize; the agency itself named asylum-seeker arrivals as a key factor and documented that migrant households drove 88% of NYC's sheltered increase. The point isn't to scapegoat arrivals — it's that an orderly, capacity-matched immigration policy and an end to family homelessness are complementary goals. Pretending migration played no role makes both crises harder to solve honestly.
